Processor

The expected and unmistakable AMD with socket 939 hit the market

When we buy a computer we always have to choose between several options, the most important, and that will define a large part of the remaining hardware, is the processor. We tend to find ourselves between an AMD or an Intel, although they are by no means the only possibilities. Both brands can offer us one or other advantages depending on the model that we analyze.

In the case of AMD, starting today, we can opt for a new type of processor based on socket 939.

Let’s not think of a socket as the place where the processor fits, because if these vary, it is not for pleasure, without or to adapt to the changes and needs of the market.

In the case of the 939 that concerns us, new improvements have been added that equate it in some aspects to the Intel and others that far exceed them.

Let’s first look at RAM. If we are attentive when observing a motherboard, we will notice that all those destined to last generation Intel processors have RAM memory structured in two blocks. This is because the Intel are capable of handling Dual memory, that is, it works at twice the normal speed, 400 Mhz of memory for two, 800 Mhz.

In AMD boards we will not find this structure, at least in those that use sockets other than 939. The reason is simple, these processors did not support such memory, so they were at a clear disadvantage. So that this does not influence the sale, AMD has prepared the series of processors based on the 939 to work with Dual RAM, thus saving a roadblock in the processor race.

But it does not seem logical for a company to launch new models to technologically equate them with those of the competitor, it could give the impression that they are in the queue waiting for new improvements to be presented to adapt to them.

This is one of the reasons that has led the new processors to work with a front-end bus (FSB) at 1600 Mhz.

It is inevitable to compare them, in part to get an idea of ā€‹ā€‹what these changes really represent, and what better comparison than with Intel’s counterpart models.

The Pentium 4 in this aspect are a little further behind, because although a motherboard prepared to work with them at 1,200 Mhz has recently been presented, we must remember that it is not more than the common 800 Mhz overclocked.

In this way, AMD has managed to double the Intel in FSB speed, an extremely important aspect not only for the processor itself, but also for the possible improvements of other components such as the RAM itself.

These are some of the advantages of the new socket on which the following processors will be based; the AMD Athlon 64 FX-53, occupying the top positions in performance, and the AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 3700+ and 3500+ for non-professional computers.

Although they indicate 3800, let’s not forget that in these processors the name is not given by the speed in Mhz at which they work, but the speed at which an Intel should work to be just as efficient.

Something that we also see in the name is that it works at 64 bits, it is good that more and more processors of this type appear so that we are introducing ourselves to this technology, but we cannot forget that 32-bit versions will continue to appear. A progressive change is always better and leads to an adaptation more in line with the user.

But little else tells us its name, for example, it does not tell us about the Cool’n’Quiet technology, which will reduce energy consumption becoming important in laptops, or the EVP, Enhanced Protection Against Viruses.

EVP is obviously not the acronym for Enhanced Virus Protection, but for Enhanced Virus Protection. This technology is based on the future Service Pack 2, SP2.

When SP2 is running on our computer, it will keep us relatively safe, we cannot expect it to be an invulnerable system or to cover all types of viruses, but, as it evolves in this aspect, it will protect us to a certain extent from possible viruses via e- mail and web and will keep our personal data safe, both from the computer itself and from the network in which it is integrated.

All these innovations or improvements in the processors, which are already on sale at a price of 799 dollars for the Athlon 64 FX-53 and 720, 710 and 500 dollars for the Athlon 64 3800+, 3700+ and 3500+ respectively, will favor competitiveness in this field of computing.
