Which monitor to buy: features to consider when choosing a monitor for your PC or Mac

LG 34UC97 monitor

Screen type

CRT technology has long been superseded by a thinner and brighter version, the LCD screen. Under the umbrella of LCD technology, there are many options to consider. First of all, we have to decide which display technology is the most suitable for you.

LCD flat panel monitors mainly use three different panel types: TN, IPS, VA or PLS

1.-Twisted nematic (TN)

The main advantages of TN panels are their fast response time -2 ms (or less) – and their low price. Its main disadvantages are narrow viewing angles, low light, and poor color reproduction.

Lenovo G24-10 - 23.6 Gaming Monitor

CHECK PRICE

  • 23.6-inch screen with 16: 9 format and 1920 x 1080 px resolution
  • 1 ms response time
  • With FreeSync
  • HDMI and DP ports
  • 144 Hz frequency response

A perfect monitor for gamers that offers vibrant color and FreeSync with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 px. It is a perfect model to play online, that’s what the TN panels are designed for.

And best of all, it doesn’t have the price of a gaming monitor. It’s very cheap. Its design is sober, without fanfare.

2.-Vertical alignment (VA)

AV panels have better viewing angles than TNs, better color reproduction, and generally higher maximum brightness. Also, they tend to have the lowest black levels. Unfortunately, the response time of a VA panel is less than that of a TN panel.

3.-In-Plane Switching (IPS)

IPS monitors are usually the most expensive. They have better viewing angles and produce the most accurate colors; however, their blacks are not as deep as on VA panels. IPS monitors are the slowest of the bunch, both in response time and input lag.

  • Monitor Contrast: 1000: 1
  • Response time: 1 ms
  • Display brightness: 350 cd / m2

For about 500 euros you have Nvidia G-Sync and resolution 2560 × 1440 pixels. Its performance is very good and the stand is fully adjustable. The only drawback is that it does not have default settings for games and that its menu system is nothing to write home about. It is cheaper than equivalent options from other manufacturers. Also perfect for gamers .

4.-Plane-line switching (PLS)

Technology similar to IPS that was proposed by Samsung. PLS displays support angles as wide as IPS displays and offer higher brightness with less power consumption.

Display backlight

ASUS VX239H monitor

The term LCD stands for liquid crystal display . LCDs use liquid crystals to show what is seen on the screen. The crystals act as a shutter for the backlight, and depending on the type of charge placed on them by the monitor’s built-in electrodes, the crystals either allow light to reach the user or they “close”, allowing light to reach the user. that way the pixels express the appropriate color.

The LED – based monitors are also LCD (liquid crystal still use), but use a different type of backlight. Most monitors in recent years use cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL).

Types of LED backlight

  1. WLED – This is the most commonly used type of LED backlight in monitors today and features white LEDs aligned along the edge of the monitor matrix, just behind the liquid crystal matrix. The WLED backlight typically consumes less power.
  2. RGB LEDs – Instead of using white LEDs on one edge of the screen like previous technology, RGB LEDs are lined up across the entire matrix panel. This gives the screen access to a wide color gamut with more accurate colors than what is possible with WLED. It is a more expensive technology.

And what about OLED screens?

Technology that promises a lot, but has not quite taken off. OLED screens use materials that light up when an electrical current passes through them, so it is no longer necessary to have a backsheet that illuminates the entire screen. This promises a few advantages over LCD technology: they are thinner and more flexible, they have better brightness and contrast, a more realistic image is achieved in better lighting and they consume less. They are still very expensive.

Connectors of a monitor

DisplayPort

The successor to DVI and HDMI, DisplayPort is a higher bandwidth connection that facilitates thinner and lighter monitors, as they no longer require special circuitry to receive a video signal. Its adoption is increasing. It is capable of a resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels at 60 frames per second. The most current standard is DisplayPort 1.4.

DVI

It is a video interface designed to obtain the highest possible display quality on digital displays. It is advisable to buy a monitor with at least a DVI connection. You can achieve a resolution of 1,920 × 1,200 or higher. DVI generally does not transmit audio.

HDMI

ASUS VX239 monitor

The HDMI connection is used to connect the display to a high-definition source, such as a Blu-ray player, video game console, or DVR-based high-definition set-top box. HDMI connections are very common today and essential. HDMI 1.4 achieves a maximum resolution of 3,820 × 2,160 pixels at 30 frames per second. Currently you should go for monitors with HDMI 2.1

USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 (USB C)

Many monitors also have USB 3.0 connections for charging and powering compatible USB devices. The newer ones have USB 3.1 with reversible Type-C connectors.

Vga

The analog video interface that most of us have grown up with. It will end up disappearing in favor of the other options.

How to choose a monitor for a computer

Vision angle

You have to look at the monitor from different angles and be aware of how much the colors can change or the screen darkens. Colors and brightness should not change when viewing the screen from different angles. Almost all monitors have a 178º viewing angle.

Accurate colors

Look at an image that you know well and check that the colors are beautiful and true to life. Unless you’re working with photos professionally or want to watch HDR movies, a screen covering 99-100 percent sRGB is sufficient.

What does it mean for a monitor to have HDR?

Simply put, what it means is that these types of displays can handle more detail in the brightest and darkest parts of an image, along with a wide range of colors. Most screens support HDR10 (just like televisions) and go up to 10 bit in color depth. The most modern ones support HDR10 + (with 12 bit).

You have also heard that there are other options: HDLG, Dolby Vision (DV)… The DV system is proprietary, and HDR10 is an open standard, something we like more…

Bright screens

They can increase the contrast of movies and games.

Black level

The more black level a monitor shows the better.

Graphic card

If your PC does not have a good graphics card, it is useless to buy a screen with 4K resolution.

Where can you find deals on monitors for PC and Mac?
